The 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 was superseded by the Barracuda 7200.14 just ten months after the 7200.12's release. Looking at a comparison between the 7200.12 vs 7200.14 shows that the more recent 7200.14 was a huge improvement over the 7200.12. The 7200.12 has average sequential read/write speeds of 97/91 vs 161/155 MB/s on the newer 7200.14. Additionally the small file 4K read/write speeds of 0.62/1.32 are improved upon by over 25% on the newer version. Overall there is no contest between the two drives and considering that they are similarly priced, the newer 7200.14 is the clear winner. The 7200.12 has an effective speed of just 88.4 MB/s which is a whopping 54% below the average of the group leaders[Mar '14 HDrivePro]

This is the latest version of Western Digital's mid-range Blue drive. At only one year of age this drive is relatively new and the performance figures reflect this. With maximum sequential speeds of 180 MB/s (both read and write) the Blue is amongst the faster drives currently available and in terms of real world performance it beats its predecessor the 2010 Blue (WD10EALS) by around 18%. The 2012 Blue has a single 1TB platter which combined with its 7200 rotation speed allow for above average performance across the board. In terms of value for money a larger capacity drive will nearly always be a better choice but within the 1TB category as a system drive, the 2012 Blue is a very reasonable, if not the best, option. [Jan '14 HDrivePro]
