The Toshiba MQ01ABD100H SSHD is a 1TB 5,400 RPM HDD with 8GB of NAND flash. The NAND acts as a high speed cache and gives the drive some SSD-like performance characteristics. The cache covers nearly 1% of the total capacity but once exhausted speeds drop to levels that match the MQ01ABD100, the non SSHD version of this drive. Prior to cache exhaustion, the MQ01ABD100H has peak sequential read/write speeds of 172/83 MB/s and peak 4K read/writes of 14.1/24.5 MB/s. These are fantastic 4K figures which approach SSD throughputs but unfortunately the sequential figures are equally unimpressive and leave the drives performance profile severely unbalanced. Overall the MQ01ABD100H scores an effective speed of just 100 MB/s and sits amongst the slower drives. For small file use cases where the majority of IO hits the cache the Toshiba is a superb choice but for most users, it's probably not. [Mar '14HDrivePro]
We calculate effective speed which measures performance for typical consumers. Effective speed is adjusted by current cost per GB to yield value for money. Our calculated values are checked against thousands of individual user ratings. The customizable table below combines these factors to bring you the definitive list of top HDDs. [HDrivePro]
